Kids say the darnedest things… or in this case, kids hear the darnedest things. My family has taken on fantasy football in recent years and this comes with a fantasy football draft (if you don’t do fantasy football, this basically means everyone selects the football players for their fantasy team). We like to make it fun and plan a “draft party”, as many fantasy footballers do. A few weekends ago, we were at my parents’ house discussing our draft party and making plans. My five-year-old overheard our conversation and was making some plans of her own. On the ride home, she revealed she was going to collect her stuffed giraffes and draw a picture of a giraffe to make a sign for our party. It dawned on my husband and me that she thinks we are saying giraffe party, not draft party. We didn’t have the heart to tell her there would be no giraffe party, so we decided we would have one!
Now, before you think I am completely crazy, when I say we had a giraffe party, this simply involved collecting our stuffed giraffes (we had more than I realized),
buying a few small decorations, and getting a cake. Publix (our go-to bakery) does not make giraffe party cakes (can you imagine?), so we went with a football-themed cake and plopped 2 plastic giraffes on top along with the words “Giraffe Party”
I think fantasy football is here to stay in my family and we have decided going forward this will be our annual giraffe party! Why, you ask? Because they’re only little once, and in the blink of an eye, my daughter will be too cool for giraffe parties with her mom.
